Based on a recent Gallup Poll, “Fifty-three percent of Americans, a new high, say it is extremely important for the government to take steps this year to halt the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S. Fewer, 43%, but also a new high, say it is extremely important to develop a plan for dealing with illegal immigrants already in the U.S.” (LINK)
So, Can a Tax Plan Address Illegal Immigration in the U.S.?
Short answer: YES! Not only CAN a tax plan Address the issue, a plan has already been created that can address it.
Long answer: Tax consumption. Our current tax system exempts nearly 20 MILLION Illegal Immigrants every year. Why? Because it is based on income. Illegal Immigrants don’t report income so their income is not taxed. The ONLY taxes that Illegal Immigrants pay under our current system are state and local sales taxes – which we ALL pay whenever we buy something. But state and local sales taxes are a small portion of the total taxes you or I pay on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis. The majority of the taxes you and I currently pay are through income. The less Illegal Immigrants pay, the more we have to cover their costs; and the more Illegal Immigrants there are, the more money we have to shell out.
BUT! There is a solution. Tax consumption and reward LEGAL U.S. citizens with a rebate of their taxes up to the (HHS) National Poverty Level. Why? Because removing Income Taxes levels the playing field between the poverty level workers and the Illegal Immigrants; and we are no longer “punishing” legal U.S. citizens. There are a few things we MUST buy to survive: food, clothing, and transportation. Regardless of your legal status, we all have necessities (even if it is just Beer and CheezIt’s). Now, add in the rebate (or “prebate” as FairTax.org calls it) of taxes up to the National Poverty Level for those legal U.S. citizens, and we’re not only promoting U.S. citizenship, we’re punishing those Illegal Immigrants who flock here to suck the life our of our economy.
Now, as long as Illegal Immigrants want to stay in the U.S. – ILLEGALLY that is – they not only have to pay (consumption) taxes, they get to help us legal U.S. citizens fund our Social Security and Medicare systems. Or, when they realize that they’re better off working in their own country, they can leave.
I’m all for LEGAL immigration, but it’s the ILLEGAL immigration that needs to stop. FairTax.org has an answer to the question – a solution to the problem – let’s not ignore it any longer. Join the FairTax, contact your congressmen, make a difference.
